Truck Storage Guide
Truck bed drawer hardware guide.
Truck bed drawers need hardware that can handle loaded travel, vibration, lock control, release access, and the space limits of a bed platform or overland storage system.
Short answer
For truck bed drawers, use heavy-duty side-mount locking drawer slides when the drawer must pull out smoothly, stay closed while driving, and stay open while loading gear. Confirm depth, loaded weight, side clearance, fasteners, and release access before building the drawer box.
What makes truck drawers different
A truck drawer is not a normal cabinet drawer. It may carry tools, recovery gear, camping equipment, a fridge, a stove, or a full cargo box. It also lives in a moving vehicle where vibration, dust, slopes, and sudden stops are normal.
That makes lock behavior and structural support more important. A drawer that slides open while driving can damage gear and the vehicle. A drawer that rolls closed while loaded can be frustrating or unsafe at camp. A drawer that is not square can bind once the truck flexes or the cargo shifts.
Hardware planning points
Build checklist
- Measure bed platform depth and drawer box length.
- Confirm both slide mounting surfaces are parallel and rigid.
- Leave access to the release mechanism.
- Use fasteners suited to plywood, steel, or aluminum frame material.
- Test lock-in and lock-out before adding full cargo weight.
- Check tailgate, tonneau cover, fridge lid, and cargo interference.
Should a truck drawer use locking slides?
In most truck bed storage systems, yes. Locking slides reduce the need for separate straps or latches and make the drawer more controlled in daily use. Lock-in holds the drawer closed while traveling. Lock-out holds the drawer open while you load tools or reach gear.
