Utility Storage Guide
Utility room pull-out storage hardware.
Pull-out trays make utility rooms easier to use when cleaners, bins, towels, laundry supplies, and tools are stored low or behind doors.
Short answer
Use bottom-mount slides for most utility room pull-out shelves and trays because the storage is often open, compact, and bottom-supported. Use heavy-duty slides only when the tray is large, loaded, or needs full-extension lock control.
Where pull-outs help most
Utility storage is usually awkward because items are low, tall, and mixed. A pull-out tray lets you see the back of the cabinet without kneeling or unloading everything in front.
Measure the cabinet, not the label
- Clear opening width after hinges, face frame, and door swing.
- Usable depth before pipes, hoses, outlets, or rear panels.
- Vertical clearance for bottles, handles, bins, or spray triggers.
- Shelf thickness and rail height below the tray.
- Loaded weight with liquids, tools, or full containers included.
- Whether the tray needs a latch, soft-close, or simple manual close.
Bottom-mount slides keep the tray simple
Many utility pull-outs do not need tall drawer sides. A flat tray with a low lip can be easier to clean and easier to load. Bottom-mount slides support that style of open tray from below, as long as the shelf is stiff and the rails stay parallel.
